Security expert reveals Miley Cyrus used ‘oldest trick in the book’ after video of her and bodyguard at Grammys went viral

Will Geddes shared his expert opinion on the 2024 viral video

The 67th Annual Grammy Awards are upon us and it’s set to be a fantastic night, but it'll be hard to beat last year’s buzz following Miley Cyrus’s bodyguard debut.

The 2024 Grammys were a sure-fire hit for Cyrus after she gave the performance of a lifetime, with fans also spotting a potential swipe at her ex.

Not only did the 32-year-old take home awards for her ‘Flowers’ chart-topper, but she also became the focus of online conspiracies after a video of her and her bodyguard on the red carpet went viral.

The man can be seen walking alongside Cyrus with a large umbrella held in his hand closest to the star, and his index finger flat on top of it.

After fans were convinced that he was carrying a weapon, a security expert decided to weigh in on the short clip to set the record straight.

Some speculated that the umbrella was actually the bodyguard's means of concealing a 'firearm' or 'assault umbrella', with one X user even speculating that his 'left arm is longer than right arm' and it’s a 'gimmick'.

"Real weapon concealed by the black coat. Oldest trick in bodyguard book," they added.

While another guessed: "Bullet proof shield or concealed firearm."

Well, to put all the fan theories to rest, security specialist Will Geddes has opened up to LADbible about what he really thinks was going on at the Grammys.

The expert confirmed that 'tactical umbrellas' do indeed exist and are even available to buy online, explaining: "So if they are a licensed protection officer, which I would imagine Miley will have, then there's every good chance that he will be carrying a weapon anyway.

"But having said that, in terms of the umbrella, the umbrella is a really practical tool, you will see it being used by quite a few celebrities. And it's used for two reasons.

"And there are very special tactical umbrellas that you can actually buy. And these umbrellas are very, very rigid. They're not like your regular umbrellas, which just simply sort of fold if you hit someone with them, they're reinforced steel.

"And they can be used for two purposes - they can be used as a weapon, but they can also be used if you have someone who's either trying to jump in on your principal, trying to throw something at your principal, or even a very intrusive paparazzi, you could obviously open that umbrella and use it as a shield."

Geddes continued: "And it's quite commonly done. I've used the tactical umbrella a few times. And you know, there's like a solid steel sort of frame.

"So I mean, you could jack someone in the sternum or if you used it as a defence against a knife or something, it will be highly effective."

The security specialist also added that someone as famous as the Hannah Montana star is likely to have a 'lot of threats continually' thrown her way from 'mad crazies fans and stalkers' so believes there's a 'good chance' her security team would use such a tool.

And, when asked what he reckoned about the rumours claiming the arm carrying the umbrella was fake and just for show to conceal the fact he was actually holding onto a weapon inside his jacket, Geddes explained: "I think 'fake arms', 'guns in umbrellas', I think that might be pushing it.

"But there are tactical umbrellas."

Well, there you have it.
