Viewers spot unscripted moment during gripping Adolescence scene that wasn’t actually meant to happen

The four-part programme stars Erin Doherty, Stephen Graham and So Solid Crew's Ashley Walters

Drama fans are praising a ‘prefect’ new Netflix programme after learning a poignant moment between characters wasn’t actually in the original script.

One-shot television shows are really turning into Lancashire actor Stephen Graham’s bread and butter.

First, there was the fierce drama thriller Boiling Point, set in a restaurant kitchen, and now Adolescence - a ‘disturbing’ four-piece project where every episode is ambitiously filmed without a pause.

The Netflix miniseries, created by Graham and Enola Holmes writer Jack Thorne, with Philip Barantini onboard to direct, follows Jamie Miller (played by Owen Cooper), a teenager who is arrested for the murder of his classmate.

Despite releasing on streaming on March 13, thousands of TV fanatics have already binged the programme and are only just realising one iconic moment was completely unscripted.

Speaking to Variety, Barantini revealed an episode three exchange between Jamie and his child psychologist Briony Ariston (Erin Doherty) was brilliantly unscripted.

“Owen’s such a lovely kid so to get him to really go there and be really nasty and horrible to this character, it wasn’t in his nature initially to do that,” the director gushed.

“So, there were moments in that episode where, during the rehearsals, I kept on saying: ‘go further, go mad, you hate her, scream at her, get it all out’.”

“There was one moment in one take, which I never asked him to do, where he’s talking to Erin [Doherty] and the camera’s on him and he just starts yawning.

“Everyone behind the camera was going, ‘oh my god, he’s never done that before!’ Erin being Erin just said to him, ‘I’m sorry, am I boring you?’. And he had this cheeky smile on his face."

The teen’s genius move has sparked debate on Facebook, with one keen observer writing: “In episode three, there is a part of the episode where young Owen yawns and Erin Doherty character replies with ‘Am I boring you’. The yawn was not scripted and nor was her reply originally but it had the cast and producers etc. in stitches.”

The viewer, who brought the scene to the attention of fellow social media users, went on to remark how they believed the off-the-cuff moment was perfect and fitted the Adolescence characters to a T.

“I have said on so many forums etc. what an absolute masterpiece the programme is and how powerful and true to real life it is,” they continued. “Especially to those who have difficult and challenging 13-year-old boys and girls. I can’t praise it enough.”

The gushing fan’s sentiments were echoed by another social media user, this time writing on X: “You’ve left me reeling, gonna need a week to recover from that!”

“A simply astonishing piece of television,” someone else said. “One of the finest dramas I've watched in the last 20 years. The writing holds a mirror up to modern society, & it looks right back at your soul.”

A third replied: “Phenomenal performances from all the cast, brilliant writing and directing. Also is it 'Thee' Brad Pitt who was executive producer??”

If you didn’t know, the Fight Club star is in fact credited as an executive producer on the four-part drama, with his company Plan B producing the project.

Barantini recently revealed in an interview with the Radio Times that he was shell-shocked by Pitt’s excitement for the project.

“Brad was on the phone with us and he was so enthusiastic,” he said.
