The creator behind the brand-new rom-com Nobody Wants This has spoken out following severe backlash over a controversial stereotype in the 'heartbreaking' new series.
The 10-part Netflix series, which only dropped on the streaming platform last week (26 September), tells the story of an unlucky-in-love sex podcaster who finds herself falling head over heels for a rabbi.
Starring the likes of Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, it didn't take long for Nobody Wants This to skyrocket to the streamer's prestigious number two spot for TV Programmes in the UK Today.

However, while the new series, created by Erin Foster, has received rave reviews - others have pointed out some major issues with how the series portrays Jewish stereotypes.
One X user slammed: "Not to kill everyone's buzz, but I got really mad about Nobody Wants This, a show that stars Adam Brody as a hot rabbi. I should love this show, and yet I think this show hates me as a Jewish woman."
"I'm enjoying Nobody Wants This, but I'm so fed up of Jewish women always being portrayed as intensely neurotic and annoyingly overbearing," penned another.

And a third added: "I loved #NobodyWantsThis: The romcom beats are excellent, the chemistry is PHENOMENAL, obsessed with the siblings, but the portrayal of Jewish women is stereotypical AF."
Now, Foster actually based Nobody Wants This on her own personal love story with her husband Simon Tikhman - a music executive and not a rabbi.
She actually converted to Judaism before she and Tikhman tied the knot and came up with the idea for the series during her conversion process.

"I think we need positive Jewish stories right now," Foster told the LA Times.
She continued: "I think it’s interesting when people focus on, 'Oh, this is a stereotype of Jewish people', when you have a rabbi as the lead. A hot, cool, young rabbi who smokes weed.
"That’s the antithesis of how people view a Jewish rabbi, right?"

During the interview, Foster also explained how she tried to strike a balance between creativity and depicting the characters accurately adding: "If I made the Jewish parents, like, two granola hippies on a farm.
"Then someone would write, 'I’ve never met a Jewish person like that before. You clearly don’t know how to write Jewish people, you don’t know what you’re doing, and that doesn’t represent us well'."
While admitting she 'didn’t grow up Jewish', Foster explained that she made the active effort of consulting with writers who were born Jewish when creating Nobody Wants This.

Foster stated her main aim of the show was to 'shed a positive light on Jewish culture from my perspective — my positive experience being brought into Jewish culture, sprinkling in a little fun, [and] educational moments about things in Judaism that I love without it being heavy-handed'.
Nobody Wants This is currently available to stream on Netflix.
