BBC viewers are obsessed with the latest season of the 'absolutely brilliant' crime drama

Fool Me Once fans have praised 'wicked' actor, Adeel Akhtar, after spotting him in a gritty new series that people can’t stop binge-watching.

While Netflix is definitely having a moment right now when it comes to top-tier viewing material - see The Menendez Brothers doc and the Nobody Wants This rom-com - it's clear that other streaming platforms are also providing a bunch of other bangers.

The BBC has just released an all-new second season of the beloved legal drama which first hit our screens back in 2021.

The plot of the latest season follows defence lawyer Sam Malik (Akhtar) who has taken on the case of PC Justin Mitchell (Socha), accused of killing high-profile climate activist Marcus Calderwood. The victim was left for dead in a violent hit-and-run after knocking him off his bike.

A quest for the truth gets underway as the 'trial of the decade' commences.

While trying to find out what really went down, Sam finds himself struggling with his own mental health, as not everyone appears to be entirely honest about what actually happened that fateful night.

The series is none other than Showtrial, and you can check out the official trailer here:

Fans of the series, which stars the likes of Akhtar alongside This Is England's Michael Socha, Skins' Joe Dempsie and Doctor Who star Tracy Ifeachor, have been treated to the second instalment which only landed on Sunday (6 October) after a three-year wait.

Unsurprisingly, viewers have rushed to social media to share their avalanche of praise for the new season with one X user writing: "Watched episode 1 of Showtrial on BBC 1.

"I am usually very critical of crime procedurals especially those involving solicitors. I am really happy to say that I was impressed. The script and the acting were superb and for once that was an accurate portrayal of a crim solicitor."

A second penned: "Showtrial is so well written and so much better than S1 (so far)

"It really evokes thoughts and empathy on both sides of the argument! Nobody does drama like the British!"

"Enjoyed episode one of Showtrial on the BBC. Odd that it's the second series of something with completely different characters and a different setting though. Looking forward to the rest of the series," gushed a third.

A fourth quipped: "I am eagerly anticipating a lengthy night as I immerse myself in S2 of Showtrial on @BBCiPlayer."

"Another quality story, once again the defendant is a really interesting character. Big fan of both Michael Socha and Adeel Akhtar and they are excellent as always," a fifth piped up. "Like the first series there is plenty going on and it grips you from the start."

Praising the leading actors, Akhtar and Socha some more, a sixth exclaimed: "Michael Socha is great in this - between his performance and the always brilliant Adeel Akhtar it’s more than enough to keep me watching."

A seventh confessed: "Binged all of Showtrial. Adeel Akhtar and Michael Socha are absolutely brilliant as always. Highly recommended."

"Showtrial is quite good, Adeel Akhtar, who seems to be in everything ATM is excellent as always, the show already has me guessing," echoed an eight.

Striking up a parallel between his role on Showtrial and Harlan Coben's Fool Me Once, another pointed out: "Showtrial is good but Adeel Akhtar has a meds problem again and Michael Socha is a cocky sh*te again. I keep thinking I’ve already watched this."

And a final X user echoed: "Really enjoying Showtrial, cracking writing, pacy, tense and twisty. Michael Socha and Adeel Akhtar are completely terrific."

That's me sold!

Showtrial is currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
