Gavin and Stacey actor admits he's 'disappointed' he wasn't asked to return for show

The Gavin and Stacey Christmas special will give BBC viewers the next instalment after five years, but one big name looks to be missing

While it may not feel like it with the less than lovely weather, we still have quite a bit to go until Christmas hits.

With that said, it's not stopped us from counting down the days until we can watch the eagerly-anticipated Gavin and Stacey Crimbo special.

While fans are looking forward to seeing their favourite stars - including Ruth Jones, Joanna Page, Mathew Horne and James Corden - back in action, one star from the beloved BBC sitcom has since come forward admitting he's 'disappointed' he wasn't asked to return.

In case you need your memory jogging, the last episode - which was filmed back in 2019 - saw Nessa (Jones) getting down on one knee and asking Smithy (Corden) to marry her.

After ending the episode on the major cliffhanger, fans of the show were desperately hoping for a follow-up series, revealing whether Smithy and Nessa's on-off romance ever reached its happy ending.

Well, it seems we may get our prayers answered this December.

Ness and Smithy also share a son, Neil (aka Neil The Baby), played by actor Oscar Hartland.

The 15-year-old appeared in four episodes in season three between 2009-2010 before returning for the 2019 special.

However, he has since opened up to The Sun about being 'disappointed' he didn't get the call when this year's Christmas special was announced.

"I'm disappointed. I was hoping to get the call," he said. "Neil must feature in the final episode because he's Smithy and Nessa's son, they can't write him out. Neil would be 15, the same age as me."

While he may not be returning, Oscar gushed: "I loved working on the show although I obviously can’t remember my first spell as baby Neil because I was so young.

"But I had a great time working again when I was ten, especially as I had to have a month off school. All my scenes were with Ruth and she was brilliant with me, we got on really well.

"She was my on-screen mum and my off-screen mum too. She really looked after me."

Oscar hasn't yet given hope than he may, one day, be enlisted to play Neil once again.

"They filmed the last Christmas Special in August so they can't be far away," he explained. "But I know that the script is being kept a strict secret and even Joanna Page who plays Stacey hasn't got a clue where the story is going to go."

He concluded: "This is my last chance to play Neil because there's never going to be another episode. I'm glad about that, it will bring closure to the show that everyone has loved for more than 17 years."
