James Corden shares real reason why Gavin and Stacey will never return

James Corden shares real reason why Gavin and Stacey will never return

The 'Smithy' actor revealed why the much-loved BBC sit-com needed to come to an end in the new New Years Day documentary

That's it - Gavin and Stacey has officially reached its conclusion after just under two decades.

Following last night's release of the long-awaited 'behind the scenes' documentary - which aired exactly a week after the last ever Christmas special - there's simply nothing more to say about the much-loved sitcom.

'But why did it have to come to an end at all?' I hear you ask. 'Why couldn't they have kept making more episodes?'

Well, only James Corden has the answer to that...

Now, fans were left in tears on 25 December, when the final ever episode finally saw Smithy and Nessa tie the knot at long last - following a series of minor obstacles, of course.

The episode also saw the entire cast, including the titular twosome, Pam and Mick, Pete and Dawn, Gwen, Brynn, and Jason, and even 'Dave Coaches', return to TV screens to help plan Smithy's big day - which was initially supposed to see him marrying Sonia.

By the end of the episode, producers had fulfilled their promise of tying up all loose ends, and the majority questions fans had left were answered in a new documentary titled A Fond Farewell, which aired on the BBC last night (1 January).

The feature-length programme consisted of bloopers, interviews with the cast, and discussions with writers about why they decided to take the ultimate episode in the direction they did.

The star-studded documentary also included footage from Brynn and Jason's mysterious fishing trip, which has had tongues wagging for 17 years now.

As we say, however, following last night's documentary, fans of the show have been left with a rather bittersweet feeling.

Sure, it's great to know how every character turned out, and who ended up with who - but at the end of the day, when all's said and done, the series is over. Gone. Finito.

"Feeling emosh at the fact gavin and stacey is officially over and there will never be another one," one fan penned on X last night.

Another added: "gavin and stacey is so deeply close to my heart and my life, i can’t put into words how i feel now that it’s officially over."

And while some might be clutching onto hope that the Great British funny-fest might one day be rebooted, writers James Corden and Ruth Jones recently shed light on why that'll sadly never be the case.

Speaking on last night's documentary in a 1-1 interview, the Smithy actor explained: "Probably from the first Christmas special that we did, when Dave proposes and Smithy says, 'Don't marry him', from that minute on it felt like they had to end together.

"And that's what he says in this last scene, 'I know it's messy and not perfect, but that's because we're messy and not perfect'."

Jones, who has played Nessa since the series kicked off in 2007, added of the reason the show had to end for good with their wedding: "When Smithy and Nessa got together, that really is the end, because we can never see them actually together.

"Seeing Smithy put the bins out, it just won't work."
