American Great British Bake Off viewer left confused after finding one detail hard to 'understand'

American Great British Bake Off viewer left confused after finding one detail hard to 'understand'

The Great British Bake Off fan took to Reddit to ask Brits about what they'd noticed

The Great British Bake Off is back on our screens, and we’re now two weeks into the drama – and what a dramatic watch we've had this time.

We’ve had one contestant quitting unexpectedly and two others falling to the floor, and that’s all before anyone was even booted out of the competition.

But with all that going on, one fan across the pond somehow found themselves a little distracted by something else.

While the Bake Off is one of the most British concepts out there, it’s no longer just for viewers who live in its home nation.

Thanks to the modern-day powers of streaming, the show has found an audience across the world.

Even Friends star David Schwimmer admitted he was such a huge fan that he ended up appearing on the celebrity version a few years back.

And he’s not the show's only US supporter, with another taking to Reddit after episode two had aired to ask others about a major question they had.

“I am genuinely perplexed, having seen a few seasons/series at this point - the first and starting again with what’s available via American Netflix (Noel era),” they explained.

“I’m having a hard time understanding the severity of the judges’ comments to contestants.

“Could some British viewers tell me how vicious are the judges intended to be?”

They said the judges clearly have ‘high standards for the work’ and ‘don’t mince their words’, noting that their husband – who is also American – had picked up on how ‘incredibly rude and mean spirited’ they seemed as well.

"I was a bit surprised by this reaction,” they continued.

“I’ve always been curious but really find them to simply be expecting the best work from the bakers and just be a bit stuffy. What are your thoughts?

"I feel like the way the contestants react in the moment and during the interviews they find the judging to (mostly) fair.”

Naturally, they didn’t get too much agreement from Brits, with one commenting: “I always think they’re quite fair and honest tbh! Sometimes Prue is a bit brisk but I think it’s all much friendlier than other shows.

“And usually pretty constructive too like they’ll always tell contestants how they could have avoided certain outcomes for example.”

Someone else wrote: “The whole reason I love the show is how un-American it is. I think on a whole the judges are way nicer than judges on American cooking competitions. I don’t find them rude at all.”

A third added: “In the beginning Paul and Mary Berry had a good cop bad cop vibe. Mary's worst comment would be calling something 'informal' looking, no matter what a state it was.

"When Prue replaced her though her energy matches Paul's a lot more so it does feel mean spirited sometimes.”
