Why Weezer bassist’s wife was shot by police and charged with attempted murder following hit and run in her neighbourhood

Jillian Shriner was shot in the shoulder by LA police on Monday (7 April) and charged with attempted murder on Wednesday

Arrest records have shown that Jillian Lauren-Shriner has been charged with attempted murder two days after being shot by police in the shoulder. Here's what we know so far.

It all started on Monday (7 April) while police were investigating a nearby hit-and-run in the area in which Jillian and her husband, Wezzer bassist Scott Shriner, live.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) had called police for backup at around 3.25pm local time as they were investigating a three-car hit-and-run where the suspects had fled the scene.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that 'CHP requested a backup locating three misdemeanour hit-and-run suspects who fled into a residential neighbourhood near the 134 Freeway and Figueroa Street'.

A suspect was then spotted running round the back of a building, so police gave chase.

This is where Jillian - who was not involved in the hit-and-run itself - comes into it.

Why did police shoot Jillian Shriner?

As officers approached the area where the suspect was last seen, they found Jillian allegedly armed with a handgun in the yard of a neighbouring property.

Officials explained: "As the officers were in the rear yard of that residence, they observed a female, later identified as 51-year-old Jillian Shriner, in the yard of a neighbouring residence armed with a handgun."

Police say they asked Jillian to drop her weapon on numerous occasions, but that she did not comply and at one point pointed the gun at officers.

This is when LAPD police opened fire on Jillian, shooting her in the shoulder. "Shriner then pointed the handgun at the officers, and an Officer-Involved Shooting occurred," the LAPD stated.

After being shot, police say Jillian ran back into her house before returning with another woman 30 minutes later and surrendering to police.

Jillian is said to have sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound, and no police or other members of the public were harmed.

LAPD also later confirmed Jillian was not involved in the hit and run itself, but said she was 'absentee booked for attempted murder'. Records show she was charged on Wednesday, with a bail set at $1 million.

She was released on bond Wednesday night (9 April).

A police press release also confirmed a 9mm handgun was recovered from Jillian's residence.

A video from a nearby news helicopter showed two women exiting the home with their hands raised before being detained.

The other woman is believed to have been a family babysitter.

What happened to the suspects of the hit and run?

One of the suspects from the hit and run was taken into custody around 4:20 p.m. He had been found hiding in a nearby backyard in his boxers, and he had jumped into a nearby pool.

The other two suspects have not been located at the time of writing.
