We’re all probably familiar with AI or artificial intelligence these days, but did you know that it could be used to help you get the perfect foundation shade?
Now, if you’ve ever struggled to shop for foundation or other base products such as concealers and correctors online, you will know just how tricky it can be to not only work out which shade you will be but also to take into consideration your skin’s natural undertones.

But the world’s first AI powered foundation promises to take all the guesswork out of it. And instead of having to wonder whether you’re a tan, porcelain, mocha or mahogany, you’ll have a shade customised exactly to you.
So, let’s find out a bit more about the foundation that keeps selling out; DCYPHER's 'My Custom' foundation.
Priced at £42 per bottle, the foundation itself is free of fragrances and parabens, meaning it’s even a great option for those with sensitive skin. Plus, it’s cruelty-free and vegan too.

But what has been really wowing customers is the AI-assisted shade matches.
How does it work?
Now, while it might take a few minutes for the brand’s website to determine your perfect shade match, it is well worth the time and effort.
You'll be asked to choose the type of coverage that you’d like, with shoppers being able to choose from ultra sheer, sheer, medium and full, depending on their preference. Then you’ll be asked what type of finish you’d like the foundation to have, whether that be natural, matte or radiant, with you also giving an indication as to what type of skin you have.

That’s either dry, oily/combination or balanced and if you don’t already know this, you should be able to work it out by thinking about how your skin feels at the end of the day when you don’t have any makeup on your face.
If it feels oily or parts of your face are shinier than the rest, you have oily/combination skin. Those who struggle with dry patches or tightness most likely have dry skin. And if you don’t have any real issues with your skin – lucky you – then you have balanced skin.
After you’ve made your selections, it’s time to do your skin tone scan.

Essentially what happens is it connects to your computer or phone’s camera to capture your face three times, with it recommending that you remove any makeup and aim for natural daylight, if possible, to get the most accurate results.
After it’s taken the three scans it will provide you with your skin tone code, then they “will mix to measure individual pigments to make this exact tone,” according to the brand.
And once you’ve got this code you can place your order. It also means you’ll be able to shop your exact shade time and time again. Or, if you find that you’re a bit more tanned in the summer months or a little paler during the winter, you could always repeat the scan again then to tailor it to your skin tone then.
But what if the AI hasn’t gotten your shade just right? Well, if you receive your foundation and it doesn’t quite match, there are free adjustments, with them mixing you a new formula if you need them to.

What are customers saying?
With over 400 five-star reviews, 97% of shoppers would recommend the My Custom Foundation.
One happy customer took to the brand’s website to explain: “I have to say I am very impressed! I didn't realise I was wearing the completely wrong shade of foundation until this arrived. I have always struggled to find the right match as I have fair skin with warm undertones - but this is perfect!
"I also love that you can customise it according to your skin type, coverage, and finish. It lasts all day and doesn't sink into my fine lines. A definite repeat purchase for me - love it!”
Another shopper called it a ‘perfect match.’ They went on to reveal: “I am the woman with 15 different half-used foundations because I have found it so hard to get the right shade. I have been given the wrong shades when colour matched at beauty counters, and trying to buy online I was never sure what my undertone was, and always seemed to end up with something too pink or too yellow. So I’m massively impressed that my custom foundation from DCYPHER was spot on on the first attempt.”
