Back in 2003, Madonna was joined on stage by Britney and Christina Aguilera during a performance of her hit song 'Hollywood'.
Midway through the number Madonna kissed both pop icons on the lips which caused outrage among conservative viewers at the time.
Despite the backlash immediately following the kiss, it has gone down in history as one of the most remembered and provocative moments in pop culture.
The impact could be seen on Twitter as soon as the images emerged, with one fan tweeting: "OMFG CAN'T BREATHE BRITNEY AND MADONNA RECREATED THE KISS AT."

One Twitter user reflected on the reaction to the kiss in 2003 and how times have started to change.
They tweeted: "Remember whatever year it was when Britney and Madonna kissed and it was a big f***ing deal and now pride celebration is bigger than ever? Why was girls kissing girls ever a big deal to begin with??"
Both Britney and Madonna have referenced their VMAs kiss in later years. They reunited in 2003 for the release of their single 'Me Against the Music'. The song's music video sees the pair play cat and mouse in a nightclub before it ends with an intimate moment against a wall.
More recently Madonna was an outspoken supporter of the #FreeBritney movement which was established by Britney's fans to end her conservatorship.

In July 2021, Madonna posted a statement calling for Britney's freedom on Instagram.
"Give this woman her life back," she wrote. "Slavery was abolished so long ago! Death to the greedy patriarchy that has been doing this to women for centuries. This is a violation of human rights! Britney we coming to get you out of jail!"
Britney and Sam met six years ago on the set of her music video 'Slumber Party', which happens to contain a reference to Madonna's 'Express Yourself' music video.

The couple made officially wed in a ceremony at their secluded Thousand Oaks home on Thursday (9 June), for which the singer was dressed in a white Versace gown with a slit up one leg.
Speaking to Vogue about the event, Spears said the couple wanted to make their wedding a 'small and beautiful moment with family and friends'.
"We wanted warm and feminine colours including blush, white, cream, and gold, and a lot of various shades of pinks, blush, and reds," she continued.
We're feeling so nostalgic right now.
