Sam Asghari reveals one thing he 'tried to understand' about Britney Spears as 'weirdest' thing about their marriage is exposed

Despite previously vowing never to 'speak ill' about ex-wife Britney Spears, Sam Asghari this week lifted the lid on the 'weirdest' aspect of their marriage.

Speaking on the Sibling Revelry podcast hosts Kate and Oliver Hudson on Monday (27 January) - just over a year since his divorce from the pop star was finalised - 30-year-old Sam told listeners that several aspects of their high-profile life together were far from conventional.

The ex-couple tied the knot at a plush Los Angeles ceremony in 2022, six years after first meeting on the set of the mother-of-two's music video for 'Slumber Party' in 2016.

Sadly, after just 14 months, the pair were reported to have separated, and in December of last year - on Britney's 43rd birthday - their divorce was finalised.

Sam - who, last month, went Insta-official with new girlfriend Brooke Irvine - has only given a handful of interviews to press since he and the 'Toxic' hit-maker went their separate ways, including one chat with People Magazine in March 2024, where he insisted he 'never understood' why former flames 'talk badly about each other'.

This week, however, the model and fitness star lifted the lid on the highs and lows of their prior romance in a bombshell podcast appearance, where he also confessed that the 'weirdest' aspect of their marriage was the controversial conservatorship that his wife was placed under.

Speaking to Bride Wars actress Kate Hudson and her brother Oliver, he claimed 'everything was going well' in their early days together, until he caught wind of the extremity of the restrictions which had been legally enforced onto Britney's lifestyle.

"I thought, 'I’m in America, what do you mean someone doesn’t have basic human rights and that someone over the age of 18 needs permission from their parents?'

"And that was by far the weirdest thing to deal with. It was a very difficult time."

Sam continued: "It blurred into our relationship for almost seven years, but it was so much that we’ve gone through as a couple and we’ve learned so much and it was a beautiful experience."

Following a public breakdown in the early Noughties, a judge deemed in 2008 that Britney was no longer in a fit state to make decisions surrounding her own wellbeing - including her personal life and career - and she was placed under the conservatorship of her father, Jamie.

The #FreeBritney campaigned formed by the public in the years that followed ultimately resulted in another judge reviewing her case, and in 2021 the conservatorship was ended.

Discussing the prior legal arrangement, Sam described it as 'such a ridiculous thing in this country to have to deal with'.

Elsewhere in the interview, he claimed his wife's past legal arrangement was something he ceaselessly attempted to get his head around, but that this was far from easy.

"The people that you’ve let into your circle, you’re vulnerable to and they’re taking advantage," he explained.

"You owe something to them or something which is so ridiculous. That was the most difficult and weird spiral that I’ve experienced in my life ever."

Asked how he was able to balance his relationship with Britney with her conservatorship in the initial stages of their romance, he recalled: "First you have to be in a position to say anything, do anything.

"Because if you’re just a boyfriend and just there, people can force you out or get you out of the situation if they don’t like you around, so you have to be really careful with how you deal with this type of thing."

Revealing what advice he'd give to anyone in a similar position to himself, he added: "I think the best thing that you can do is provide support in that moment and that’s what I did, I provided as much as I could – support and to be there and provide information and resources that might be helpful.

"I really tried to understand why the conservatorship even happened in the beginning."
