Britney Spears' ex-husband Sam Asghari reveals 'weirdest' thing he had to deal with during marriage

Britney Spears' ex-husband Sam Asghari reveals 'weirdest' thing he had to deal with during marriage

The Hollywood couple separated in August 2023 after 14 months of marriage, with their divorce being finalised in December of last year

Being married to a global superstar means your relationship will never be considered 'conventional'.

But this week - just over a year since their divorce was finalised - Britney Spears' ex-husband Sam Asghari has been publicly reflecting on their romance, and has revealed to press what the 'weirdest' aspect was of their life together.

For those in need of a refresher, the couple began dating back in 2016 after meeting on the set of the mother-of-two's music video for 'Slumber Party'.

In September 2021, Sam proposed to Britney, and in a plush Los Angeles ceremony nine months later, they tied the knot.

Sadly, however, it wasn't meant to be, and in August 2023, they were reported to have separated.

Their divorce was finalised in December of last year, on the 'Baby, One More Time' singer's 43rd birthday.

Ever since their split, 30-year-old Sam - who, last month, went Insta-official with rumoured new girlfriend Brooke Irvine - has given several sporadic interviews to press, one of which heard him promise never to 'speak ill' of Britney.

In an interview with People in March last year, he spoke highly of their romance: "It was a blessing to be able to share life with someone for a long time. And people grow apart and people move on."

He went on: "I've always hated people leaving a certain relationship - and at some point they told each other they love each other and they sat at the same table and ate food [together] - so I never understood when people part ways [and] they talk badly about each other.

"I had nothing but an amazing experience and a great life, and that's always going to be part of my life, a chapter of my life."

In a new update, however, Sam has seemingly been looking back on his former romance with a more critical eye, and told Sibling Revelry podcast hosts Kate and Oliver Hudson that several aspects of their marriage were far from conventional.

"Divorce, separation, break-ups suck for anybody," he began. "Of course it’s going to suck but I had the mindset of ‘I will never be sad that it’s over, I’m always going to be grateful and happy that it ever even happened'."

He went on to confess, however, that he found Britney's controversial conservatorship - which ended in November 2021 following mass public appeal - to be the 'weirdest' aspect of their marriage.

"Everything was going really well until one day I started learning about what the conservatorship is," Sam explained.

"I thought, 'I’m in America, what do you mean someone doesn’t have basic human rights and that someone over the age of 18 needs permission from their parents?'"

As reported by the Independent, following a public breakdown in the early noughties, a judge deemed in 2008 that Britney was no longer in a fit state to make decisions surrounding her own wellbeing - including her personal life and career - and she was placed under the conservatorship of her father, Jamie.

The #FreeBritney campaigned formed by the public in the years that followed ultimately resulted in another judge reviewing her case, and three years ago, the conservatorship was ended.

Discussing the prior legal arrangement, Sam described it as 'such a ridiculous thing in this country to have to deal with'.

"And that was by far the weirdest thing to deal with," he added. "It was a very difficult time.

"It blurred into our relationship for almost seven years, but it was so much that we’ve gone through as a couple and we’ve learned so much and it was a beautiful experience."

Sam went on to add, however, that has no regrets from their time together, and holds no grudges about their decision to end their marriage: "If you do everything with honour, respect and you think twice before you do anything, nothing could ever go wrong and nothing could ever be a bad thing.

"If it doesn’t work out, if things end and things happen that you didn’t want to happen, you just have to take a moment and appreciate that it ever even happened. You can’t sit there and dwell and be sad."
